Funeral service for Mrs. Patsy Lackey Hall, age 51, of Opelika will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 21, 2005 at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home. The Rev. Clarence Trimble will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hillview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 20, 2005 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home in Alexander City.

Mrs. Hall passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 in Montgomery. She was born on January 24, 1954 in Los Angeles, CA to Jack Lackey and Georgie Pitchford Lackey. She attended school at Southern Union State Community College and Troy State University. She worked as a Manager for Bruno’s. She loved to cook, collect antiques and “bargain shop”. She always put others before herself.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Larry Hall of Opelika; sons, Keith Hall of Opelika, and Chris Lackey of Columbus; grand-daughter, Kierstan Hall of Opelika; father, Jack Lackey of Columbus; sister, Deborah Mixon of Fort Son, GA; brothers, Steven Lackey and Tim Lackey, both of Alexander City and Paul Lackey of Tallassee and many nieces, nephews, and loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Georgie L. Lackey and brother, David Lackey.

James Fred Mitchell, 86, of Brewton, Alabama passed away Saturday, June 18, 2005, at his home in Keego Community surrounded by his beloved family. He was born on December 15, 1918, in Decatur County, Tennessee, to the late Jesse Robert and Sallie Grimsley Mitchell. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty three years, Sybil Frances Mitchell of Brewton. Surviving him are four children; James Fred Mitchell, Jr. (Anne) of Foley, Alabama, Alfred Henry "Buddy" Mitchell (Dawn) of Montgomery, Alabama, R. Douglas Mitchell of Brewton, Alabama, and Tanya Mitchell of Fayetteville, Arkansas. He is survived by six grandsons: James Fred Mitchell, III (Joy) of Daphne, Alabama, Douglas Bolton Mitchell (Holly) of Auburn, Alabama, Jesse Benjamin Mitchell (Amanda) of Durham, NC, Alfred Henry Mitchell, Jr. of Auburn, Alabama, Jason Green Mitchell (Lisa) of Montgomery, Alabama and Justin Mitchell Carte of Redwood City, California He is also survived by four great grandchildren: Constance Cary Mitchell, Olivia Brantley Mitchell, Thomas Jason Mitchell and John Patrick Mitchell. Also surviving is his brother Henry Mitchell of Scotts Hill, Tennessee.

Preceding him in death was his grandson Cary Thomas Mitchell of Auburn, Alabama.

James Fred Mitchell was educated in the public schools of Decatur County, Tennessee. He attended the Wabash Institute in Vincennes, Indiana and studied engineering at Tennessee Tech University in Cookesville, Tennessee before moving to Brewton, Alabama in the late 1930's. On April 20, 1942, he married Brewton native Sybil Frances Wiggins, Daughter of John Benjamin Wiggins and Thelma Mae Jernigan. Fred and Sybil Mitchell have been married for 63 years.

Colonel James Fred Mitchell entered the United States Army on October 11, 1941, prior to the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and served his country for three decades. He was a veteran of three wars including World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. His duty stations included England, France, Germany, India, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Sicily, Korea, Vietnam, Israel, Nationalist China, Thailand and Japan. Colonel Mitchell was awarded numerous military medals including the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Double Bronze Oak Leaf, Army Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Knot, American defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Five Battle Stars, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Korea Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Battle Stars, Army Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Overseas Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, Army Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal with Palm, Vietnam Training Service Honor Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Expert Marksman Badge with Carbine, Pistol and Rifle Bars.

Major General Kenneth J. Quinlan. When presenting Colonel Mitchell with the Air Medal, Called the veteran of three wars and "American Hero." Quinlan said, "It truly is an honor to be the one to recognize Mr. Mitchell. He is a great soldier, a great father, a great Husband and a model citizen." Colonel Mitchell was past Chairman of the USS Alabama Battleship Commission serving eight years including terms as vice chairman, Treasurer and Secretary. He was appointed by two Alabama governors to terms on the State of Alabama Veterans Affairs Board. He was elected by the military veterans of his state to serve as the Alabama Department Commander of the American Legion. Colonel Mitchell serves on the National American Legion Magazine Commission, Escambia County Alabama Veterans War Memorial Committee and is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Additionally Colonel Mitchell is Past Committeeman for the Boy Scouts of American, Past President of the Brewton Rotary Club, Past National Committeeman for the American Red Cross, Past Chairman of the Escambia County Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross and Past Vice Co-Chairman of the American Red Cross for the State of Alabama. In 1980 he was named Man of the Year by the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce. He was first licensed by the Department of Commerce, Civil Aeronautics Administration in 1948 to pilot single engine aircraft. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Brewton where has served on the Board of Deacons. Colonel Mitchell was a long time supporter of Auburn University both in academics and athletics.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 20, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Brewton, Alabama. A service of Celebration and Remembrance of the Life of James Fred Mitchell will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at the Brewton First Baptist Church with the Reverend Jack Fitts officiating. Internment with full military honors will follow at Union Cemetery in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing. The family can be contacted at P.O. Mrs. Janie Sue Ward Baker was born October 10, 1911, in Wilcox County, Alabama, the daughter of the late Janie Permelia Steen Ward and Carlisle Jackson Ward. She grew up in a large loving family in Pine Apple, Alabama.

Although Mrs. Baker was first a wife and mother to her family, her lifelong calling was that of a teacher. She began her teaching career after two years as a student at Troy Sate Teachers’ College in the early 1930’s. Janie spent summers completing her BS degree, and later, her MA degree at Auburn University. Among the schools in which she taught in those early years were Forest Home and Furman in Butler County, and later Lanett. After her children were school aged, she returned to teaching, first at Dixie in Russell ‘county and for many years at Beauregard in Lee County.

Mrs. Baker was a long time resident of Lee County. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she taught the women’s Sunday School class for many years.

Survivors include one son, William O. Baker, Jr. (Linda) of Opelika; three daughters, Joan Baker Maguire (Reed) of Las Gatos, Calif., Dolly Baker Wallace of Charleston, S.C. and Betty Baker Blanton of Opelika, eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, one sister, Lois Ward Bonner of Camden, AL, twelve nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, W.O. (Bill) Baker.

Funeral Service for Mrs. Baker is 2:00pm, CST, Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at Jeffcoat-Trant Chapel in Opelika. Burial is in Garden Hills Cemetery. The Rev. Pat Nobel and Rev. George Palmer are officiating.

Ouida Cook McClendon, age 87, died at her Azalea Place home early Wednesday evening, June 29, 2005.

Ouida was born on July 15, 1917 in Juliette, Georgia to the late Conrad Fauster Cook and Fannie Ogletree Gibson Cook.

She spent her childhood years in Opelika but moved to Franklin, VA when she was thirteen.

She graduated from Franklin High School in 1934 and attended Business School.

She was united in marriage to William Crawford McClendon, Jr., her childhood sweetheart, on May 16, 1943.

On February 11, 1946 Ouida and her husband Bill opened the doors of Swiss Cleaners, a business that they owned and operated together for 29 years.

She served the community through her volunteer work with United Way, Boy and Girl Scouts of America, Lee County Hospital Auxiliary, and Opelika Historic Society.

She was a faithful and active member of Opelika First United Methodist Church and held a special love for her friends in the Strickland Sunday School Class.

Predeceased by her husband, William Crawford McClendon, Jr., Ouida is survived by her daughter, Ouida McClendon Stough and husband Butch, of Gainesville, GA, her son, William Crawford McClendon, III and wife Patrice, granddaughters, Vera McClendon Lee and husband Chris of Martinez, GA and Virginia McClendon Crawford and husband Mike, great grandsons William Matthew Crawford, and a sister-in-law, Vera Pruett Bright and husband Ladson of Wilmington, NC.

She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

A private family service at Garden Hills will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, 2005. The Reverend Doctors Jim Sanders and Bill Dudley will officiate at a memorial service celebrating Ouida’s life at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of Opelika First United Methodist Church.

The McClendon family is especially deeply appreciative for the extraordinary care, help, support, and love extended by Pat Jackson Woody, companion and friend, Cathy Rowe, EAMC Hospice nurse and the Azalea Place staff. On May 31, 2005, Margaret Elizabeth Parmentier Hartwig died at home in Auburn, Alabama with her husband Chet and her daughters, Chris and Carol at her side. Ultimate cause of death was late on-set Alzheimer’s disease, diagnosed at the age of 80. She was born on April 29, 19191 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She was class valedictorian in the 86h and 9 th grades at McKinley Jr. High School and graduated from Tremper High School as 5 th academically out of 158 students. Margaret graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin in 1943. In 1951, she and her young family moved to Auburn, where Chet became a professor of Sociology at Auburn University. That same year, Margaret, an excellent swimmer, saved a baby from drowning at Prather’s Lake. After raising her girls and completing a Master’s degree in Mathematics in 1965, Margaret taught in the Math Department at Auburn University for 11 years and at Southern Union College in Opelika, Alabama. She was active in the Girl Scouts, the League of Women Voters and as a volunteer tutor in math and reading until her late 70’s.

Margaret believed that a happy life involved a close-knit family, assisting those in need, responsible citizenship, intellectual challenges, lots of exercise, a lean diet and practical economical living. Margaret was an enthusiastic camper, keeping a detailed logbook of the family travels each summer to National and State Parks and Forests all over North America. These travels inspired her daughters to live in the Canadian Rockies in British Columbia where Margaret and Chet enjoyed hiking and extracting honey on Carol’s bee-keeping farm. Margaret was active physically, swimming a mile at a time and playing golf, 9 or 18 holes daily at Indian Pines for 20 years until the age of 80.

Margaret Hartwig is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dr. Chester Wendell Hartwig of Auburn, Alabama, who cared for her at home throughout her illness; daughters, Christine Carrie Gilbertson of Ta Ta Creek, British Columbia (step-son and wife and three children) and Carol Lee Hartwig (husband Raymond Demarchi) of Duncan, British Columbia (his two sons, their wives, and four grandchildren), elder sister, Mary Ross of Charlotte, North Carolina, and younger sister Jeanette Dega (husband Donald) of Cross Plains, Wisconsin, and five nieces and four nephews and children. She was pre-deceased by older brother, John Parmentier of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. She will be sorely missed as a light-hearted, warm, empathetic, strong, modern woman with the most delightful, sincere smile and many contributions to students, friends and family.

Heartfelt thanks to members of the East Alabama Medical Center Personal Care and Hospice. Sincere thanks for your professional and import services, valuable friendships, hugs and even warm meals!

In accordance with the deceased and family member wishes, no funeral or memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice. Mr. Timothy Cotter, Sr. was born May 22, 1925 in Lackawanna, New York. He served his country faithfully during WWII in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Sea Poacher. Mr. Cotter worked for the Nickelplate Railroad in Buffalo, NY and the Ralston Purina Co. for 38 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4 th Degree.

Surviving are his wife, Rose Ann Cotter, Lake Martin; his children, Nadine Cotter (deceased); Kathleen Cotter, Auburn; Timothy John Cotter, Jr. and his wife Lisa, Louisville, Kentucky; Patrick Cotter (Dee & Skye), Opelika; Mark Cotter and his wife Rhonda, Wetumpka; and six grandchildren, Timothy John III, Cameron Rose, Tristin, Craig, Corey and Justin.

Warren Alton "Doc" Jordan, Jr. Funeral services for Doc Jordan, 88 of Alexander City, will be Sunday, July 24, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church Alexander City. The Rev. Dr. Gerald Hallmark and the Rev. Dr. Skip Lowery will officiate. Burial will follow in the Daviston Baptist Church Cemetery. Doc Jordan died on Thursday, July 21, 2005, at Chapman Nursing Home. He was born on June 17, 1917, in Laurinburg, NC to W. A. Jordan, Sr. and Rodney Flack Jordan. He was a member of the First Baptist Church Alexander City, where he was a deacon, song leader, and sang in the choir. He received his degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1941 form Auburn University where he taught from 1942-1945. Doc was a veterinarian in Alexander City from 1947 until his retirement. He officiated football, baseball, and softball for Alexander City, Benjamin Russell High School, and Tallapoosa/Coosa County schools for forty four years. He was selected to umpire at the World Series Little League Tournament in Pennsylvania in 1971. "Doc Jordan Day" was declared by Alexander City in 1967 and the high school baseball field at the Sportsplex was named for him in 1987. Doc was named Alexander City Man of the Year in 1954, and he was nominated for the Alabama Athletic Directors and Coaches Associated Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

Dr. Clements, who died Saturday, July 9, 2005, at his residence, was born March 20, 1932, in Haynes City, FL.

Dr. Clements was a longtime resident of Lee County and a graduate of Lee County High School. He was a graduate of the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1956. Dr. Clements served in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corp and had a practice I Opelika and Phenix City for many years. Bill was a former member of the Cattlemen’s Association and a member of the First Baptist Church of Opelika.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years: Carole Clements of Auburn; two daughters, Cheryl (Michael) Ray of Birmingham, AL, Cynthia (Dan) Atkinson of Montgomery, AL; four grandchildren, Robin and Mitch Ray and Joshua and Joy Atkinson; three sisters, Irma Tuggle of Villa Rica, GA, Virginia Tuttle of Marietta, GA, Ann Whatley of Montevallo, AL; one brother, Larry Clements of Arkansas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 7 at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for Wendell Loraine Sowell, Sr., 85 of Houston, Texas, who died July 2, 2005.

Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Greene County, Mississippi.

Mr. Sowell received BS and MS degrees from Auburn University, Law degree from Jones Law School, and PhD form University of Oklahoma Medical School.

Mr. Sowell started as a policeman in Mobile, AL. He served as a Military Policeman in the Army air Corps during World War II. After the war he became a State Toxicologist for the State of Alabama. He then set up the crime laboratory for the Forth Worth, Texas police department and was the Director. He was the Director of the Crime Lab for the State of Ohio. Later he taught at the gradate and undergraduate level at several universities before retiring. Mr. Sowell belonged to many law enforcement societies, which included the American Academy of Forensic Scientist, National Academy of Criminal Justice Services and was a charter member of the American Chemical Society. In 1960 he was among ten people selected to represent the United States in the world forensic science conferences held at Scotland Yard, Interpol and in Italy.

Mr. Sowell was preceded in death by his parents, Larkin Andrew Sowell and Sallie Brewer Sowell; wife, Alva Webb Sowell; daughter, Darlene, Son, Darrell.

Survivors include a brother, S. L. Sowell; daughter Bashaba Gibbons; son, Wendell L. Sowell, Jr.; plus grandchildren and other relatives.

Louise Oeschle Salmons, 94, peacefully passed into the Loving Arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 4, 2005 at the Covenant Hospice residence in Pensacola. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at McIlwain Memorial Presbyterian Church, Pensacola, with Reverend Arnie Maves officiating. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Pensacola.

Louise Salmons was born on September 13, 1910 in Atlanta. She was a devoted wife to James Dalton Salmons, Jr. also preceded her in death. She was a devoted mother to her sons, Jim and Paul and, to their grandchildren Juanita and Joseph. She enjoyed spending time with her family, relatives and friends. She had a precious servant heart and her quick sense of wit was enjoyed by many. She was a member of McIlwain Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include Paul (Carol) Salmons – Opelika, Alabama and four grandchildren: Juanita Salmons Nall (Vince)- Pace, Florida, Joseph Douglas Salmons – Pensacola, Florida, Jonathan and Matthew Salmons – Opelika, Alabama.

Survivors also include four great-grandchildren: Charlie Nall, Jr., Dalton Nall, Felisha Nall and Savannah Nall, all of Pace, Florida. Mrs. Salmons was fortunate to have as devoted caregiver Vera White.

The graveside service for Mr. Elmer L. Wilson, Sr, age 69, of Opelika is Friday July 8, 2005, at 11:00 A.M.. Burial will be in the Shady Gove Cemetery with the Reverend Joe Wilson officiating. A private family visitation will be held.

Mr. Wilson died Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at his home following a brief illness. He was born April 10, 1936 in Hamilton, Georgia.

Mr. Wilson had been a resident of the Opelika area for the past 63 years. He was the owner/operation of Elmer Wilson Plumbing Company in Opelika until his retirement in 1977. He continued to work with William Wilson Plumbing Company for the remainder of his life. Mr. Wilson attended Hephzibah Primative Baptist Church and assisted in the church building's reconstruction.

He is survived by (3) sons: Elmer L. (Colleen) Wilson, Jr. of Hampton, Virginia; Ricky (Jackie) Wilson of Opelika; William (Billie) Wilson of Opelika (3) Daughters: Rejena (Dennis) Teel of Cusseta, AL; Bonnie Webster of Opelika and Teresa (Jeff) Beck of Cusseta, AL. M. Jeanine Salvas; 62 of Auburn, Alabama, died Sunday, July 3, 2005 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jeanine was born in Dover, NH the daughter of Albert and Irene (Ouellette) Salvas. She lived in Dover for a period of time before moving to Florida and then to Auburn, Alabama where she has resided for the past 8 years.

While living in Auburn, Alabama, Jeanine was a communicant of St. Michaels Church as a member of the Schola Choir at the church. She was also part of the Civic Corral Choir.

Although Jeanine loved signing, classical music and the beach, her grandchildren were her life. She loved them very deeply.

Family members include her daughter Andrea and her husband Jim Folmar of Auburn, Alabama; three sisters, Blanche Therrien of Somersworth, NH, Alice and her husband Armand Croteau of Somersworth, NH and Denise and her husband Earl Handley of Cover, NH; three grandsons, Will, Sam and Ross all of Auburn, Alabama, along with many nieces and nephews and many beloved friends in the seacoast area and in Auburn, Alabama.

Ruby Jones Simmons, age 77, of Salem, AL., passed away on July 11, 2005 at East Alabama Medical Center, in Opelika, AL.

Funeral services will be held at Concord Baptist Church on Thursday, July 14, 2005 at 1 p.m. (EDT) with Rev. Bud Passmore and Rev. James Mooney officiating. Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, A.C. Simmons and a brother Harold Jones.

She is survived by one son, Rev. He was named head coach for the Babe Ruth baseball team in 2003, a team he took to the World Series games in North Dakota and placed fifth in the games. In addition, he had served as an umpire and referee.

Mr. Coker had attended Southern Union and Auburn University. While at Southern Union, he played on the baseball team. He later graduated from LaGrange College. He also attended Langdale United Methodist Church.

He was known as a loving father and friend.

Mr. Coker is survived by his wife, Kathy Coker; daughter, Crystal (Jason) Hill of Lanett; sons, Cody Jordan Coker and Adam Coy Coker both of Valley; sister, Connie (Mike) Jones of Town Creek, AL; nieces, Katie and Betsy Spangler; and nephews, Hank and Joe Spangler.

Dr. Icenogle passed away Saturday, July 9, 2005, in St. Paul, Minnesota.

He was born November 19, 1937, in Macomb, Illinois, the son of Clement Arthur and Eleanor Grandt Icenogle.

He was educated in the public schools of McDonough county Illinois. He received a Bachelor of Science in Education form Western Illinois University, a Masters of Science from the University of Illinois and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Louisiana Sate University. He taught Geography at Auburn University for 29 years and continued to teach part time at both Auburn University and Kennesaw State University after his retirement in 1997. In 1990 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to conduct research on American explorers in Egypt.

He was preceded in death by is parents and infant son, Andrew David Icenogle. He is survived by his wife Carol Icenogle of Auburn, his son John Icenogle of Huntsville, and daughter Joy Rabun and her husband John of Atlanta, Georgia, four brothers, Robert Icenogle of San Antonio, Texas, Paul Icenogle of Paletine, Illinois, Roger Icenogle of Waterville, Maine, and Alan Icenogle of Rushville, Illinois, his sister, Carol Ashbacker of Davenport, Iowa and a host of other family and friends.

Mrs. Bertie Sossomon Wickham, age 86, of Auburn, AL, formerly of Lanett, passed away on August 13, 2005, surrounded by her beloved family. Mrs. Wickham was born on November 28, 1918, in Cabarrus County, Kannapolis, NC, the daughter of Kate Reed Henderson Sossomon and Walter Christian Sossomon. She graduated from Fairfax High School, and later finished at Perry Business School, Opelika, AL.

On February 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to her devoted husband of sixty years, Vernon Thomas “Joe” Wickham. Mrs. Wickham was a long-time member of Lanett First United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women.

Mrs. Wickham was a loving mother who was very involved with her daughters’ activities, working with the Girl Scouts program, Band Parents’ Association and various school organizations. She was a room mother and participated in TA functions.

Mrs. Wickham began her career with West Point Pepperell in the Communications Department where she assisted in the publication of the magazine The West Pointer, and was directly involved with the “Textile Travelers” program. She later worked in the Purchasing Department and retired after 25 years of service with the company. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing bridge with her friends and treasured time spent with the family.

Mrs. Wickham was preceded in death by two infant brothers and by her husband, Joe. She is survived by two daughters, Bobbie Joe (Charles “Mack”) Abercrombie of Auburn, AL and Ann (Terry) Stinson of Birmingham, AL; four granddaughters, Kathy (Mike) King, Nancy (Bobby) Herring, Sandy (Tommy) McKinnon and Amy (bill) Keaton; three great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and many friends and relatives. Her family extends their gratitude for the special care provided by Lettie Jones of Monarch Estates and to the entire staff at Morningside Assisted Living in Auburn, AL.

Mrs. James was born on May 20, 1932, in Baltimore, Maryland. She died Sept. 24, 2005, at East Alabama Medical Center, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Her husband, Dr. Charles W. James, D.V.M., preceded Mrs. James in death. Mrs. James had worked at Gayfers and J.C. Penney's and was retired from the Auburn City School System.

He graduated from Mount Carmel Catholic high' school in 1946. He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force where he served as a Personnel Specialist. He also attended Business School at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Mr. Lally served as a Transportation Manager for Morton Salt in Chicago, IL, Atlanta, GA and New Iberia, LA. He also worked as a Transportation Manager for West Point Pepperell in Lanett, AL retiring in 1990. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Opelika, AL where he served as an usher. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lally, two infant sons, his parents, and three brothers. Survivors are his daughter, Susan Wood of Wrightsville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas J. and Maria Lally of Honolulu, Hawaii; grandchildren, Michelle Wood of Atlanta, GA, Christopher Wood of Athens, GA, Alexis Lally of Honolulu, Hawaii; sisters, Mary Theresa McGorrin of Traverse, City, Michigan,Laguna Woods,CA; Betty Anne Licka of Chicago, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Leoto Dudley Mason, 80, of Benton, AL died Friday, September 16, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Mason was born on September 2, 1925 in Atlanta, GA and is preceded in death by his parents, Leoto Logan and Lucille Dudley Mason and his wife, Nancy Shanahan Mason. He grew up in Galveston, TX and spent summers in Benton. He graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute ( Auburn University) with a degree in Industrial Design. After graduating from API, he married Nancy Shanahan July 16, 1952. He served as a pilot in the Air Force and was a member of the Fighting 61st Squadron. After leaving the Air Force he continued his military career with the Alabama Air National Guard and the Alabama Army National Guard. He served as the Mayor of Benton from 1976 to 1988 and as President of the Lowndes Academy Board of Trustees from 1982 to 1986.

He is survived by his children, James Logan (Jim) Mason and wife Tammy of Benton, Nancy Mason Bernard and husband David of Auburn, AL, and Susan Mason Hand and husband Jerome of Montgomery, AL; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Kayla, and Logan Mason; Mason and Mallory Bernard; and Meredith, Matthew, and Milton Hand. Mr. Van Wettering was born September 8, 1941 in Teaneck, New Jersey son of Florence Wolter Van Wettering of Phenix City and the late Cornelius Van Wettering. He was employed by West Point Stevens in maintenance and was a former assistant scoutmaster. Mr. Van Wettering was an avid fisherman and hunter and was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. He was preceded in death by two uncles, Wilbur and Henry Van Wettering. Other than his mother is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dolores Van Wettering of Opelika, AL.

Robert Varner Corry, 89, passed away, September 17, 2005, in his residence at Monarch Estates in Auburn. Memorial service and inter­ment will take place at Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois, at a later date.

Mr. Corry was born in Alma City, Minnesota, on December 13, 1915 to Robert Varner Corry and Adeline Mary Jones Corry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rob and Addie Corry; his sister, Adeline Corry Russell; and his brother, Arthur Earl Corry; and his beloved wife of 64 years, Jane Marie Presco Corry.

During his lifetime, Mr. CorRy was a skilled tool and die maker at the Hawthorne Works of Western Electric (Bell System) in Cicero, Illinois; an avid amateur aviator, and a member for 56 years of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite at the River Forest-Austin Lodge #650 in Riverside, Illinois.

Mr. Blackard, who died Sunday, October 2, 2005 at Bethany House, was born August 13, 1914, in Valliant, Oklahoma.

Mr. Blackard was a longtime resident of Bastrop, LA, having moved there after serving his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from Mississippi River Fuel Gas Company in 1979 (Union Pacific) after 33 years. He also enjoyed his farm and raised cattle. He was a longtime and active member of First Baptist Church of Bastrop, Louisiana. He and his wife moved to Auburn, AL in 2003 to live at Azalea Place.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eddie J. Blackard of Auburn; daughter, Linda Blackard Warren of Opelika, granddaughter, Lisa Warren (Mark) DeGrange of Columbus, MS; grandson, David (Joy) Warren of Birmingham, AL; four great grandchildren, Thomas and Hanna DeGrange and Will and Jack Warren; sister, Eunice Raiford of Valliant, Ok; five brothers, Frank Blackard, Drew Mac Blackard, and Odell Blackard of Valliant, OK, Sammie Blackard and Otis Blackard of Baton Rouge, LA; numerous nieces and nephews.

Dr. Mountcastle received his B. S. in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech and his M. S. and Ph. D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Alabama in 1958. He taught Chemistry for 8 years at Birmingham Southern and 25 years at Auburn University. He loved teaching and was loved by his students. He was a member of Auburn First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Sigma Xi Honorary Research Fraternity and was an Eagle Scout. He served in the United States Navy in World War II. He was a Mason and member of the Auburn-Opelika Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Mary S. Mountcastle, one son Randy Mountcastle, of Montgomery; one daughter, E. Ann Mountcastle, MD and husband, Ben Coker of Montgomery and one grandson, Henry Coker. He had one sister, Betty Skinner, deceased, and her husband Dr. James Skinner. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
