Ouida Cook McClendon, age 87, died at her Azalea Place home early Wednesday evening, June 29, 2005.
Funeral services for Archie Coker of Valley, AL will be 2:00 p.m. (EST) Friday, July 15, 2005 at Langdale United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Langdale Cemetery. Rev. Roger Thompson and Rev. Roland Cross will officiate.
The family received friends Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Langdale United Methodist Church Family Life Center.
Mr. Coker was born January 25, 1952 in Georgia, and passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2005 in Cullman, AL at the age of 53. He is preceded in death by his father Archie Coy Coker, Jr. and his mother Jo Jan Floyd Hart.
Mr. Coker was an avid baseball fan and was heavily involved in sports events for youth and young people in the Valley area. He was an employee of the Chambers County Board of Education at the J.P. Powell Alternative School. He served as Vice-President of the Dizzy Dean, Pony League, and Babe Ruth Baseball organizations. He had worked at the Langdale pool, where he taught many children to swim and had been a Valley Swim Team coach.
He was named head coach for the Babe Ruth baseball team in 2003, a team he took to the World Series games in North Dakota and placed fifth in the games. In addition, he had served as an umpire and referee.
Mr. Coker had attended Southern Union and Auburn University. While at Southern Union, he played on the baseball team. He later graduated from LaGrange College. He also attended Langdale United Methodist Church.
He was known as a loving father and friend.
Mr. Coker is survived by his wife, Kathy Coker; daughter, Crystal (Jason) Hill of Lanett; sons, Cody Jordan Coker and Adam Coy Coker both of Valley; sister, Connie (Mike) Jones of Town Creek, AL; nieces, Katie and Betsy Spangler; and nephews, Hank and Joe Spangler.

Mrs. Bertie Sossomon Wickham, age 86, of Auburn, AL, formerly of Lanett, passed away on August 13, 2005, surrounded by her beloved family. Mrs. Wickham was born on November 28, 1918, in Cabarrus County, Kannapolis, NC, the daughter of Kate Reed Henderson Sossomon and Walter Christian Sossomon. She graduated from Fairfax High School, and later finished at Perry Business School, Opelika, AL.
On February 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to her devoted husband of sixty years, Vernon Thomas “Joe” Wickham. Mrs. Wickham was a long-time member of Lanett First United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women.
Mrs. Wickham was a loving mother who was very involved with her daughters’ activities, working with the Girl Scouts program, Band Parents’ Association and various school organizations. She was a room mother and participated in TA functions.
Mrs. Wickham began her career with West Point Pepperell in the Communications Department where she assisted in the publication of the magazine The West Pointer, and was directly involved with the “Textile Travelers” program. She later worked in the Purchasing Department and retired after 25 years of service with the company. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing bridge with her friends and treasured time spent with the family.
Mrs. Wickham was preceded in death by two infant brothers and by her husband, Joe. She is survived by two daughters, Bobbie Joe (Charles “Mack”) Abercrombie of Auburn, AL and Ann (Terry) Stinson of Birmingham, AL; four granddaughters, Kathy (Mike) King, Nancy (Bobby) Herring, Sandy (Tommy) McKinnon and Amy (bill) Keaton; three great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and many friends and relatives. Her family extends their gratitude for the special care provided by Lettie Jones of Monarch Estates and to the entire staff at Morningside Assisted Living in Auburn, AL.
Flowers will be gratefully accepted, or donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Lanett, AL, or to a favorite charity. Mr. Whelchel served his country in the USAF in the Korean War.
He was a life long pilot, past President of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), he had a great love for traveling and flying, a member of Elk Lodge #1834, a Baptist by faith and a member of the First Baptist Church of Auburn, AL.
Mr. Whelchel was predeceased by his parents and wife.
He is survived by two sons, George (Georgia) Whelchel of Auburn, AL and Rick (Julie) Whelchel of Bridgton, ME; one daughter, Katrina (Gary) Ford of Charlotte, NC. Four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A long time companion and dear friend, Vivian Johnson of Auburn, AL. A half brother Leo Whelchel of Gainsville, GA.

Irene was an active charter member of Lake Martin Baptist Church where she served as a volunteer secretary, chair nominating committee, chair of the church pictorial directory, chair of the publicity committee, Bible School secretary, nursery school coordinator, Bible school teacher, member and secretary church council, preparation of Lord's supper, church bulletin and assistant church clerk with responsibilities including updating church directory and membership lists.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by her husband of 48 years Bill Hawkins; two sons Billy Hawkins, Jr. of Lake Martin and Joseph A. Hawkins of Opelika; one sister Denise Roth (Lamar) of Jacksonville, FL; one brother Wendell Greer (Mary) of Saint Mary's Ga. and one granddaughter Ashley Hawkins of Auburn, AL.

Ponder, who passed away Aug. 26, 2005, at Monarch Estates Retirement Home in Auburn, was taken care of by loving caretakers Lettie Jones and Linda Bayes. Ponder, who was born in Winston Co., Miss, was a long time Starkville resident. He retired from Coca-Cola Bottling Co and was a Navy veteran and part of the American Legion. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman who was sometimes known as the "guide" for Bluff and Loakfoma Lakes.
Survivors include: two daughters Joan Ponder Kimbro of Old Hickory, Tenn., and Carolyn Ponder Rogers of Auburn; son Forrest J. Ponder of Starkville, Miss.; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Mrs. Lois Perkins Scroggins, 86, of Opelika passed away Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at Summers Landing Assisted Living in Griffin, Ga.
Mrs. Scroggins was born in Columbus, Ga., daughter to the late John Perkins and Nell Teel Perkins. She was a member of Central Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a charter member of the Tulip Garden Club, member of the Emblem Club and the East Alabama Medical Center Auxiliary. She worked the polls for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Nelson Scroggins and three brothers and a sister.

Mrs. James was born on May 20, 1932, in Baltimore, Maryland. She died Sept. 24, 2005, at East Alabama Medical Center, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Her husband, Dr. Charles W. James, D.V.M., preceded Mrs. James in death. Mrs. James had worked at Gayfers and J.C. Penney's and was retired from the Auburn City School System.

He also attended Business School at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Mr. Lally served as a Transportation Manager for Morton Salt in Chicago, IL, Atlanta, GA and New Iberia, LA. He also worked as a Transportation Manager for West Point Pepperell in Lanett, AL retiring in 1990. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Opelika, AL where he served as an usher. Leoto Dudley Mason, 80, of Benton, AL died Friday, September 16, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Mason was born on September 2, 1925 in Atlanta, GA and is preceded in death by his parents, Leoto Logan and Lucille Dudley Mason and his wife, Nancy Shanahan Mason. He grew up in Galveston, TX and spent summers in Benton. He graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute ( Auburn University) with a degree in Industrial Design. After graduating from API, he married Nancy Shanahan July 16, 1952. He served as a pilot in the Air Force and was a member of the Fighting 61st Squadron. After leaving the Air Force he continued his military career with the Alabama Air National Guard and the Alabama Army National Guard. He served as the Mayor of Benton from 1976 to 1988 and as President of the Lowndes Academy Board of Trustees from 1982 to 1986.
He is survived by his children, James Logan (Jim) Mason and wife Tammy of Benton, Nancy Mason Bernard and husband David of Auburn, AL, and Susan Mason Hand and husband Jerome of Montgomery, AL; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Kayla, and Logan Mason; Mason and Mallory Bernard; and Meredith, Matthew, and Milton Hand. Mr. Van Wettering was born September 8, 1941 in Teaneck, New Jersey son of Florence Wolter Van Wettering of Phenix City and the late Cornelius Van Wettering. He was employed by West Point Stevens in maintenance and was a former assistant scoutmaster. Mr. Van Wettering was an avid fisherman and hunter and was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. He was preceded in death by two uncles, Wilbur and Henry Van Wettering. Other than his mother is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dolores Van Wettering of Opelika, AL.
He is survived by two sons, Guy Van Wettering and wife Mandie and Tad Van Wettering and wife Marie both of Opelika, AL; grandchildren, Jonathan and Rebecca Van Wettering and
Jakob Van Wettering, niece and a Godchild, Christina Maloof; sister, Joyce Van Wettering of Salem, AL; brother, Neil Van Wettering and wife Mary of LaCreame Valley, CA; three brothers-in-law, Bill Traughber of Opelika, John Woitasek and wife Irene of Smiths, AL and Robert E. Barnes of Beulah, AL; nieces and nephews, Daniel Barnes, Jay Hunt, Mary Sanders, Linda Reyal and John Woitasek, Jr. and Sherrie LUnsford; several great-nieces and nephews.
He will always be remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father.

Mrs. Teague, who died Wednesday, August 3, 2005, at Bethany House, was born in Shelbyville, TN.
Mrs. Teague lived in Chappaqua, NY before moving to Auburn. She graduated from API, now Auburn University from the school of Architecture.
Mrs. Teague was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, and was a beloved wife, mother, and friend.

Robert Varner Corry, 89, passed away, September 17, 2005, in his residence at Monarch Estates in Auburn. Memorial service and interment will take place at Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois, at a later date.
Mr. Corry was born in Alma City, Minnesota, on December 13, 1915 to Robert Varner Corry and Adeline Mary Jones Corry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rob and Addie Corry; his sister, Adeline Corry Russell; and his brother, Arthur Earl Corry; and his beloved wife of 64 years, Jane Marie Presco Corry.
During his lifetime, Mr. CorRy was a skilled tool and die maker at the Hawthorne Works of Western Electric (Bell System) in Cicero, Illinois; an avid amateur aviator, and a member for 56 years of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite at the River Forest-Austin Lodge #650 in Riverside, Illinois.
He is survived by three daughters, Johann Corry (Robert) Kucik of Opelika, AL;
Kathleen (Dan) Morris of Franklin, TN; and Joyce Schar of Whitefish, MT; brothers-in-law, Carmen (Violet) Presco of Berkeley, II. and Vito (Patricia) Zotto of Davis, II.; and sister-in-law Lucy (Bob) Salvatore of Westchester, IL; eight grandchildren, Amy Nabors of Huntsville, AL.; Amanda Landrum of Opelika, AL; Corry Jeb Kucik of Bethesda, MD; Kristin Schar of Champaign, II.; Jennifer Schar Hutt of Seattle, WA; Katherine Schar of Whitefish, MT; Michelle Morris of Franklin, TN, and Kimberly Morris of Nashville, TN; seven great-grandchildren, Justin Nabors, Gage and Libby Landrum, Corbin Morris, Collin and Lily Kucik, and Josephine Hutt; and a host of devoted nieces and nephews.

Mr. Blackard, who died Sunday, October 2, 2005 at Bethany House, was born August 13, 1914, in Valliant, Oklahoma.
Mr. Blackard was a longtime resident of Bastrop, LA, having moved there after serving his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from Mississippi River Fuel Gas Company in 1979 (Union Pacific) after 33 years. He also enjoyed his farm and raised cattle. He was a longtime and active member of First Baptist Church of Bastrop, Louisiana. He and his wife moved to Auburn, AL in 2003 to live at Azalea Place.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eddie J. Blackard of Auburn; daughter, Linda Blackard Warren of Opelika, granddaughter, Lisa Warren (Mark) DeGrange of Columbus, MS; grandson, David (Joy) Warren of Birmingham, AL; four great grandchildren, Thomas and Hanna DeGrange and Will and Jack Warren; sister, Eunice Raiford of Valliant, Ok; five brothers, Frank Blackard, Drew Mac Blackard, and Odell Blackard of Valliant, OK, Sammie Blackard and Otis Blackard of Baton Rouge, LA; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Anglin was retired from the Chambers County Extension Service after 31 years of service, and from Farmers & Merchants Bank in LaFayette after 10 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church of LaFayette.

Mr. Marshall, who was born December 2,1914 in Reynolds, Georgia, passed away at East Alabama Medical Center on September 26, 2005 at the age of 90. He was a graduate of Purdue University and a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

Dr. Mountcastle passed away Monday, October 4, 2005. He was born in Smyrna, Georgia on October 31, 1921.
Dr. Mountcastle received his B. S. in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech and his M. S. and Ph. D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Alabama in 1958. He taught Chemistry for 8 years at Birmingham Southern and 25 years atf Auburn University. He loved teaching and was loved by his students. He was a member of Auburn First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Sigma Xi Honorary Research Fraternity and was an Eagle Scout. He served in the United States Navy in World War II. He was a Mason and member of the Auburn-Opelika Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Mary S. Mountcastle, one son Randy Mountcastle, of Montgomery; one daughter, E. Ann Mountcastle, MD and husband, Ben Coker of Montgomery and one grandson, Henry Coker. He had one sister, Betty Skinner, deceased, and her husband Dr. James Skinner. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
